Correlating an issue across more than one host meant tailing files in parallel and reconstructing the timeline by hand, which does not scale past a couple of boxes.
Files lived wherever was most convenient—managed cloud providers chosen by default rather than on purpose—which meant handing data and its retention to a third party. Self-hosting naively would have capped storage at the server's local disk and coupled the file corpus to the lifetime of a single box.
